  • An Introduction to Interpresource for Interpreters
What is Interpresource / Interpreter Manager?
Interpresource is an ambitious project to use the internet to improve service for both interpreters and their clients in the UK.

Organisations requiring interpreters find the standard methods of finding an interpreter, which often involves ringing up dozens of people to find someone both suitable and available, cumbersome and time-consuming. This frustration is sometimes "resolved" by using an Agency.

Use of an Agency can cause its own set of problems.
An Agency can only provide a viable service either by charging more than an interpreter (thus costing the Organisation more) or by taking commission from the interpreters (thus prejudicing the interpreters).
An Agency's necessity to find someone at any cost (otherwise it would appear that they are not providing a good service) eventually results in underqualified (and in some instances utterly inappropriate) interpreters being put forward.
When this causes prejudice, an Agency is no longer used and the Organisation once more has to do the frustrating job of finding interpreters.
It is a vicious circle, and until Interpresource there had been no practical solution.

    How does it work?
Interpreters register with Interpresource - at no cost. All they need is a UK mobile phone.
They declare their qualifications (NRPSI, APCI, DPSI etc).
When an organisation requires an interpreter, they log in to Interpresource and place the request.
Interpresource checks through its database for suitable interpreters (based on the criteria of the client), then checks their diary in case they have already advised they are not available, and then offers the job via SMS to the available interpreters.
An interpreter can reply to any job they are interested by using a short message.
Interpresource continues to send out SMS messages until someone replies. The organisation then contacts that interpreter and arranges the assignment.

    How can it be free?
Interpresource does not charge any commission. Our revenue comes from the SMS (text) messages by clients generated when they ask if you are available for an assignment. Organisations and interpreters can either negotiate fees directly or integrate their pay structure into Interpresource using on-line claim forms.

    Who would use Interpresource?
Clients needing interpreters include Legal Services, Social Services, Health Services, solicitors, doctors, tourists, companies etc - a wide range of clients can be serviced as Interpresource is faster, cheaper and more efficient than traditional ways of obtaining an interpreter.

    Can anyone sign up?
Yes, as long as you are a good interpreter and have a right to work in the UK.

    Do I need qualifications?
Clients may insist on qualifications for certain assignments (such as NRPSI in the Courts) and preference will be given to qualified interpreters when requested.

Can I leave clients my card?
Please do!! Interpresource is not an Agency, if the client is so impressed that they would want you next time, they can contact you directly.

How can I improve my ranking?
If you are honest and considerate the clients will do this for you. Another way is to ensure that your Interpresource diary or Google Calendar is up to date. Finally, get more qualifications, clients are more likely to choose you if you have qualifications. Qualifications do not have to be from the UK.

Can I use the Interpresource diary on my own website?
Yes - an example of this can be seen here

What if I am fluent in two or more languages apart from English?
Each registration is linked to a mobile phone number and a single language pair.
If you are native language standard in two languages apart from English, you would need to register twice, using a different mobile phone number and a different email address, although you can use the same name in each registration.
